Too Long? Didn't Read ● COD (Cash on Delivery) orders in India turn into RTO (Return to Origin) 25 to 30% of the time, against 2 to 3% for prepaid, so converting a confirmed COD order to prepaid before shipping removes most of the risk of a failed delivery. ● The WhatsApp flow is seven steps: confirm the COD order, follow up with non-responders, send a Pay Now request, remind after 6 to 24 hours, mark the paid order as prepaid, and continue shipping and delivery updates in the same chat. ● A small incentive such as Rs 50 off or free shipping lifts conversion, as long as it stays below your average RTO cost. Ask within minutes of confirmation and stop at two reminders. ● AiSensy's Ecomm+ dashboard automates this for Shopify stores through the COD Flow, alongside the Abandoned Cart Flow and Order Flow, and tags converted orders as AiSensy_WAPayment_Paid in Shopify. ● Customers who stay on COD still receive a cash-ready reminder with the amount and delivery date, and you should compare the RTO rate of converted orders with normal COD orders to measure the saving. |
Cash on Delivery brings in orders, but it also increases the risk of returns.
In India, around 60–65% of ecommerce orders are placed on COD, and 25–30% of those orders can turn into RTO, compared with just 2–3% for prepaid orders, according to Razorpay.
That is why many sellers try to convert COD orders to prepaid before shipping.
WhatsApp makes this easier. You can send a payment request, follow up with the customer, and continue with order updates in the same chat.
With AiSensy, Shopify sellers can automate this entire process using the COD Flow.
In this blog guide, we’ll show you the message sequence, incentive ideas, messaging costs, and how to set up the COD Flow in AiSensy.
What Does COD to Prepaid Conversion Mean?
COD to prepaid conversion is a post-order workflow. The customer has already placed a COD order on your store. You send them a payment link on WhatsApp so they can pay before the order ships.
If they pay, the order becomes prepaid. If they do not, the order continues as COD and you still ship it.
It is different from COD confirmation, which only checks whether the customer wants the order at all. Most sellers run both, one after the other.
| Workflow | The question it asks | Best outcome |
|---|---|---|
| COD confirmation | Do you still want this order? | Customer confirms or cancels before you ship |
| COD to prepaid | Would you like to pay now? | Customer pays before dispatch and the Shopify order is marked paid |
Why WhatsApp Works for COD to Prepaid Conversion
Sellers have tried calls, SMS, and email for this. WhatsApp works better for four reasons.
- The message gets seen. WhatsApp messages have around 98% open rates, so the payment request reaches the customer while the purchase is still fresh.
- Buttons replace typing. Confirm Order, Cancel Order, and Pay Now are one tap each. The customer never has to type a reply or copy a link.
- One thread for the whole order. Confirmation, payment, shipping, and delivery updates all sit in the same chat, so the customer always knows where the order stands.
- It runs on Shopify events. Each message triggers automatically when an order is created, confirmed, paid, or fulfilled. Nobody on your team has to send it.
If your store runs on Shopify, the Shopify WhatsApp integration connects these events to WhatsApp in a few minutes.
How to Convert COD Orders to Prepaid on WhatsApp: Step by Step
Here is the complete flow. Each step can be automated based on what happens with the customer’s order.
Step 1: Customer places a COD order
The customer places an order on your store and selects Cash on Delivery.
As soon as the order is created, your system identifies it as a COD order and starts the automation.
Step 2: Ask the customer to confirm the order
Before shipping the order, first check whether the customer actually wants it.
Send a WhatsApp confirmation message with two options:
Hi {{1}}, your COD order #{{2}} has been placed successfully.
Please confirm if you want us to process this order.
Confirm Order
Cancel Order
If the customer cancels, you can stop the order before spending money on shipping.
If they confirm, move them to the next step.
If they do not reply, you can follow up before processing the order.
You can also use our COD confirmation template.
Step 3: Follow up if there is no response
Some customers may see the message but forget to reply.
Instead of calling them manually, send an automated reminder after a few hours.
Hi {{1}}, we are waiting for your confirmation on order #{{2}}.
Please confirm so we can process it.
Confirm Order
Cancel Order
This helps you separate genuine orders from customers who are no longer interested.
Step 4: Ask the customer to convert the order to prepaid
Once the customer confirms the order, you can ask them to pay online.
Send a message with a Pay Now button:
Thanks {{1}}, your order #{{2}} is confirmed..
Want to make it prepaid? Complete the payment below and we will process it right away
Pay Now
You can also offer a small discount to encourage prepaid payment:
Thanks {{1}}, your order #{{2}} is confirmed.
Pay online now and get ₹{{3}} off this order.
Pay Now
Keep the discount lower than what an RTO would normally cost you.
For example, if a failed delivery costs around ₹180, offering a ₹50 prepaid discount can still save money.
Step 5: Send a payment reminder
Not every customer will pay immediately.
You can send one or two automated reminders after 6 hours, 12 hours, or 1 day.
Hi {{1}}, payment for order #{{2}} is still pending.
Complete it now to convert your COD order to prepaid.
Complete Payment
You can find more examples in our payment reminder templates.
Step 6: Update the order as prepaid
Once the customer completes the payment, update the order status in your store.
You can mark it as Paid or add a tag such as Prepaid.
This helps your operations team identify converted orders and ship them correctly.
Step 7: Continue regular order updates
After payment, the customer can continue receiving regular WhatsApp updates from the same number.
These can include:
- Order confirmation
- Shipping updates
- Tracking link
- Delivery notification
- Feedback request
- Reorder reminder
How AiSensy Automates COD to Prepaid for Shopify Sellers
AiSensy's Shopify integration lives inside the Ecomm+ dashboard. It comes with 15 ready-made WhatsApp flows in three groups. Each flow triggers automatically on a Shopify event.
| Flow | Messages | Role in COD to prepaid |
|---|---|---|
| Abandoned Cart Flow | Abandoned Cart Reminder 1, 2 and 3 | Runs before the order exists. Recovers checkouts, so more orders start as prepaid in the first place |
| COD Flow | COD Order Confirmation, COD Order Follow-Up, COD Order Confirmed Status, COD Order Cancelled Status, COD Payment Request, COD Payment Reminder | The conversion engine. Verifies intent, requests payment, reminds, and tags paid orders |
| Order Flow | Order Confirmed, Order Cancelled, Order Fulfilled, Order Delivered, Order Feedback, Reorder Reminder | Keeps the customer informed after payment, so prepaid orders also deliver on the first attempt |
Abandoned Cart Flow
Three timed reminders go to customers who added products but did not check out. This is the earliest point where you can influence payment method, because a customer who completes checkout from a reminder often pays online. Read more in our guide to recovering abandoned carts with WhatsApp.
COD Flow
Six messages cover the full conversion sequence described above. You can enable all six or only the ones you need. The payment request and payment reminder are the two that move orders from COD to prepaid.
Order Flow
Six post-purchase messages from order confirmed to reorder reminder. For COD customers who did not convert, the Order Fulfilled message doubles as the cash-ready reminder.
Dynamic Product Images and analytics
Every message can carry the actual Shopify product image for that order. The AiSensy dashboard shows sent, delivered, read, clicked, and replied counts for each flow, so you can see exactly where customers drop off between the payment request and the payment.

From then on, eligible Shopify COD orders can automatically move through the confirmation and prepaid-conversion journey.
Use the Analytics section to monitor performance and adjust your message copy or flow setup if needed.
In simple words, the flow looks like this:
COD order placed → WhatsApp confirmation sent → Customer confirms → Payment request sent → Payment reminder sent → Order becomes prepaid → Order updates continue

Why Convert COD Orders to Prepaid?
The obvious reason is RTO. But prepaid orders help in four more ways.
1. Lower RTO and fewer failed deliveries
A customer who has paid rarely refuses the parcel. The 25 to 30% COD RTO rate drops to the 2 to 3% range once the same order is prepaid.
2. Lower cost per order
Every RTO costs you forward shipping, return shipping, packaging, and the COD handling fee your courier charges. Converting the order before dispatch removes all four.
3. Faster cash flow
COD money reaches you only after the courier collects it and remits it, which can take days. Prepaid money settles at checkout, so you can reorder stock and fund ads sooner.
4. Cleaner operations
Fewer confirmation calls, fewer reattempts, and fewer returned parcels to inspect and restock. Your team spends time on orders that will actually deliver.
5. Better order data
Customers who complete a payment page usually complete their address and pincode too. That alone reduces failed delivery attempts on the orders that convert.
For more on the wider strategy, read our guide on how to reduce RTO with WhatsApp.
What If the Customer Stays on COD?
Some customers will not pay online, and that is fine. Prepaid should be an option, never a condition.
For these orders, WhatsApp still reduces failed deliveries. Send a cash-ready reminder on the day of delivery, along with the tracking link and the COD amount.
Hi {{1}}, your order #{{2}} is out for delivery today.
Please keep Rs {{3}} ready for the COD payment.Track Order
You can also send an address confirmation before dispatch and an out-for-delivery notification with the delivery window. Our order tracking templates cover each of these.
How to Increase Your COD to Prepaid Conversion Rate
Sending a payment link is the first step. These six habits decide how many customers actually pay.
1. Give a clear reason to pay now
Rs 50 off, free shipping, or a small cashback on the next order all work. Faster dispatch is a free incentive: "Prepaid orders ship today, COD orders ship tomorrow."
2. Ask within minutes of confirmation
Purchase intent fades fast. The best window is right after the customer taps Confirm Order, while they still remember what they bought and why.
3. Show the product
Customers pay for things they can picture. AiSensy's Dynamic Product Images pull the actual Shopify product image into the message, so the customer sees the exact item, not a generic banner.
4. Keep the copy to three lines
What they need to do, why it helps them, and the button. Long explanations lower the tap rate.
5. Stop at two reminders
One payment request and two reminders is enough. More than that pushes customers to block the number, which hurts your quality rating and messaging limits.
6. Make the payment page work on a phone
The customer is on WhatsApp, so they are on mobile. The payment page should open in one tap, support UPI (Unified Payments Interface) and cards, and never ask them to log in again.
Five Mistakes That Can Lower COD-to-Prepaid Conversion
- Sending the payment request too late.
Ask for prepaid payment before the order is shipped. Once the parcel is already dispatched, customers have less reason to pay online. - Offering too much discount.
Keep the prepaid incentive lower than your average RTO cost. The goal is to save money, not replace one loss with another. - Sending too many reminders.
One or two reminders are usually enough. Too many follow-ups can annoy customers and increase blocks or opt-outs. - Forgetting customers who stay on COD.
If a customer does not convert to prepaid, still send a reminder with the delivery date and amount to keep ready. - Not tracking converted orders separately.
Tag prepaid conversions and compare their RTO rate with normal COD orders. Otherwise, you will not know whether the flow is actually reducing returns.
Conclusion
COD will remain the default for a large share of Indian shoppers. The goal is not to remove it. The goal is to give every confirmed COD customer a simple, well-timed option to pay before the order ships.
On WhatsApp, that option is a single message with a Pay Now button, followed by one or two reminders. Customers who pay become prepaid orders with a fraction of the RTO risk. Customers who do not still receive the reminders that help the delivery succeed.
With AiSensy's COD Flow and Order Flow, Shopify sellers can run this whole sequence automatically, from the first confirmation to the reorder reminder. If you sell D2C (Direct to Consumer) or run any ecommerce store on WhatsApp, this is one of the fastest ways to protect margin.

FAQs
Q. What is RTO in ecommerce?
RTO stands for Return to Origin. It is an order that could not be delivered to the customer and was sent back to the seller. The seller pays forward and return shipping, and the product is unavailable for sale while it is in transit.
Q. What is COD and why does it cause more RTO?
COD stands for Cash on Delivery, where the customer pays at the door instead of at checkout. Because nothing has been paid upfront, the customer can refuse the parcel, forget the order, or be unavailable without losing anything. That is why COD orders return at a much higher rate than prepaid orders.
Q. How do I convert a COD order to prepaid on WhatsApp?
Send the customer a WhatsApp message with a Pay Now button after they confirm the COD order. If they complete the payment, the order continues as prepaid. AiSensy automates this through the COD Flow for Shopify stores and tags the paid order in Shopify.
Q. When should I send the COD to prepaid payment request?
Right after the customer confirms the COD order and before the order is fulfilled. Purchase intent is highest in that window, and a request sent after dispatch gives the customer no reason to pay early.
Q. Should I offer a discount to convert COD orders to prepaid?
A small incentive such as Rs 50 off, free shipping, or faster dispatch usually lifts conversion. Keep it below your average cost of a failed delivery, and remember that an offer moves the template into the Marketing category.
Q. Is a COD to prepaid payment request a Utility or Marketing template?
A plain payment request for an existing order is Utility, priced at Rs 0.145 per message in India. Add a discount, coupon code, or free shipping and Meta classifies it as Marketing at Rs 1.09. Meta decides based on the content, not the category you select.
See the Utility vs Marketing guide.
Q. How many payment reminders should I send?
One payment request followed by one or two reminders, spaced 6 to 24 hours apart. More than that increases blocks and lowers your WhatsApp quality rating.
Q. What happens in Shopify when a COD order is paid through AiSensy?
AiSensy adds the AiSensy_WAPayment_Paid tag to the Shopify order as soon as the payment is captured. Your team can filter on this tag to see all converted orders and treat them as prepaid for fulfilment.
Q. Can I automate COD to prepaid conversion for my Shopify store?
Yes. Connect Shopify to AiSensy, open the Ecomm+ dashboard, and enable the COD Flow. It automates COD confirmation, follow-up, payment request, payment reminder, and paid tagging without any code.
See the Shopify WhatsApp integration guide.
Q. What if the customer does not want to pay online?
The order continues as COD. Keep sending delivery updates, the tracking link, and a cash-ready reminder with the exact COD amount on the delivery day. These reduce failed delivery attempts even without prepaid conversion.
Q. Does converting COD to prepaid remove RTO completely?
No. Prepaid orders can still fail because of an incomplete address, a missed delivery attempt, or customer unavailability. Prepaid orders in India return at around 2 to 3% compared with 25 to 30% for COD, so the risk drops sharply but does not reach zero. Shipping and delivery updates on WhatsApp handle the remaining cases.
Q. What is a good COD to prepaid conversion rate?
It varies with product category, order value, and the incentive you offer. Measure your own baseline in the first month, then compare the RTO rate of converted orders with the orders that stayed COD. The gap between those two numbers, not the conversion rate alone, tells you what the flow is worth.
